Business Coach San Diego
Everything You Need to Know about Hiring a Business Coach in San Diego
Are you a CEO looking to take your company to the next level? If you are overwhelmed by opportunity, looking to strengthen your leadership team, or just want help in building the business you know you’re capable of, then it might be time to consider hiring a professional coach.
The advice that sticks out I got from John Doerr, who in 2001 said, ‘My advice to you is to have a coach.’ …I initially resented the advice, because, after all, I was a CEO. I was pretty experienced. Why would I need a coach? Am I doing something wrong?
My argument was, ‘How could a coach advise me if I’m the best person in the world at this?’ But that’s not what a coach does. The coach doesn’t have to play the sport as well as you do… A coach is somebody who looks at something with another set of eyes, describes it to you in [their] words, and discusses how to approach the problem.”
— Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google
In other words, a great business coach is an experienced professional who can help entrepreneurs unlock their potential and reach their desired results.
Our purpose is to help leaders and businesses fulfill their true potential.
What is Business Coaching San Diego?
Business coaching is a type of professional mentor or advisor relationship that helps entrepreneurs, business owners or executives establish and reach their business goals. It focuses on developing the skills needed to create an effective strategy and action plan for success. Depending on the individual needs of the client, it may cover topics such as personal development, leadership training, decision-making strategies, problem solving techniques and communication skills.
Through personalized one-on-one sessions, group sessions, or facilitation, your coach can provide guidance, advice, insight, accountability and resources that can help propel businesses forward.
Do you want to. . .

What’s Holding You Back Right Now?
While no business is headache free, you are probably capable of solving higher-quality problems than the ones you have now.
Evaluate what the bottlenecks are in your business. If you are stuck in the weeds, solving stupid problems, or scrambling to “keep the wheels on” in day-to-day operations, it’s difficult to grow the business. If you don’t have a solid team that you can rely on, it’s difficult to grow the business. If the workflow is inconsistent, creating a cash flow rollercoaster, it’s difficult to grow the business.
Before you reach out to a coach, give some thought to what your current constraints are, so you can better evaluate which coach or program is going to be the best fit for you.
How to Find Your Executive Coach in San Diego?
There are 3 primary factors to consider when looking for a business or executive coach:
1) Return on investment potential. The right coach can help you generate a return that significantly outweighs their fees, typically within 4 months. In fact, our firm won’t even offer a coaching program unless we feel confident in the potential of this outcome after conducting a diagnostic on your business. (Note: results can vary based on the current state of your business and what you are looking to achieve.)
2) Speed of results. While a coach can help you increase your potential as a leader or assist with a strategy that you otherwise might not have executed, it is just as likely that a coach will help you expedite the trajectory you are already on. In other words, you might feel confident that you’ll achieve your desired result eventually, but a great leadership coach can help you save time or flatten the learning curve of that growth process.
3) The right fit. The connection between a mentor and mentee is possibly the number one make-or-break factor in the success of a coaching relationship. Not only should you select a coach that has the right expertise, but you should select a coach that you genuinely like and respect. Both parties should be looking forward to working together over the long term.
Once you are clear on what you’re looking for, you can start by asking trusted colleagues for a referral, or even take to Google. Look for a coach that provides education and tips that resonate with you, and is backed by testimonials and case studies that illustrate their experience and effectiveness.
Our Business Coaching Services in San Diego
The purpose of coaching is to build a business that works for you, not because of you. At our firm, we will help you develop the strategy, the systems and the team to succeed… because we believe that running a business should give you more life, not suck the life out of you.
That being said, we don’t coach out of a can. We have a number of coaching and training programs with varying focuses and intensities to meet your business needs.
Here are some examples:
One-to-One Coaching
The goal of 1-on-1 business coaching is to help you build the business you desire – whether your objective is to build your business to sell, or continue to grow it while reducing its reliance on you.
As an experienced business and executive coach since 2005, I have successfully coached more than 1,000 business owners and executives to achieve higher profits, strengthen their teams, get more done, and ultimately be successful.
My clients all have one thing in common: they already do a lot of things right AND they know they are capable of more. Through one-on-one coaching, I help them bridge the gap between where their business currently stands and where it needs to be. As a result, my clients have reported an average annual revenue growth of 31%, with some going on to sell, acquire or pass the business down to the next generation.
Strategic Planning
A strategic plan is not a massive document or PowerPoint that you create once and update every 3-5 years. It is a living document that is easy to understand, and is developed through an iterative process of focus, analyzing feedback and data, SWOT analysis, setting clear objectives, measuring the results, and course-correcting as you go.
As a certified Scaling Up coach, I use the Scaling Up tools as the operating platform for building and executing your strategic plan. We create the plan through annual and quarterly offsite retreats with your leadership team, where we first align on the long-term direction, then break it down into annual initiatives and quarterly priorities.
90-Day Planning Workshop
90-days is the ideal amount of time to plan for execution in your business. Yes, you will have goals and initiatives that span much longer periods of time, but action planning in 90-day sprints improves focus and speed of execution. That is why our most popular group workshop is GrowthCLUB – a 90-day planning workshop, open to both clients and guests. GrowthCLUB members spend a full day working with a team of coaches to cut through the “busyness” of day-to-day operations and get focused on growth.
Another significant benefit of the 90-day planning workshop is the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers and learn together in a friendly and supportive environment. This workshop is not about theory or complicated plans that are full of fluff; you will walk away with a practical, easy-to-execute, one-page action plan.
DISC Assessments, Debriefs and Training
The DISC assessment is a powerful tool for improving communication within your company, as well as strengthening connections with clients and prospects. With four distinct behavioral styles – Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness – the DISC profile measures the intensity of each individual’s characteristics, providing insights to improve your communication skills and leadership effectiveness.
We can provide a single DISC assessment with a professional one-on-one debrief, or company-wide training on using DISC to improve communication, leadership, and/or sales effectiveness.
Management Training
Do you have managers in your business that are great team members… but no one ever trained them how to be great managers?
Typically in mid-market or small businesses, top performers get promoted to a position of leadership based on their individual contributions. That is a good start, but now their challenge is to get that same level of performance from their team – and that is an entirely new skill set for most.
We created the Management Training program for smart, motivated managers who want to be more effective – whether they are up-and-coming, or already have years of management under their belt. This workshop will give them practical tools to empower them to multiply results from their teams.
Leadership Development
Leadership is not a job title. Leadership is influence. You can be the best and brightest that your industry has to offer, but if you cannot lead others in a way that they grow and thrive, your capacity for growth will be capped.
“The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” – Ralph Nader
Our leadership coaching program starts by assessing the goals of the leader, as well as their current strengths, weaknesses, and behavioral tendencies. Whether you are a small business owner or a corporate executive, developing your leadership skills is critical to sustainable growth.

FAQs
Is it worth paying a business coach in San Diego?
Hiring an experienced and knowledgeable coach can be one of the best investments you can make in yourself and your company, and a great coach will always provide a return on investment.
However, even the most skilled coach in the world cannot be effective if you don’t commit to the process. As with any form of coaching, you have to do your part, and if you do, results will follow. Don’t waste your money.
How often should you meet with a business coach in San Diego?
There are many types of programs and advisors that work in different rhythms. However, having 2 to 4 sessions per month is the most common coaching format. Before committing to a program, consider:
1) How fast do I want to go? Increasing meeting frequency also tends to increase the speed of execution. On the other hand, if you do not yet have the time or desire for rapid growth or transformation, meeting less frequently might be a better fit.
2) How am I wired to operate? High drivers or those who aren’t naturally structured tend to benefit from frequent meetings, whereas individuals who are wired to operate more methodically can get great results while meeting less often. If you’re structured and commit to execution between sessions, then you might not need or benefit from the pace of weekly sessions.
What is the cost of a professional business coach in San Diego?
The cost of hiring a coach can greatly vary depending on the coach’s experience, the scope and duration of the engagement, the size and complexity of your business, and how many people will be involved in the program.
Group coaching programs might be as little as a couple hundred dollars per month, or perhaps a flat fee of $500-5,000 for a predetermined duration of time; whereas one-on-one business coaching packages can range from $1,000 to $10,000+ per month, particularly if the coach is highly experienced or well-regarded. Executive coaches working with larger companies often charge even higher rates.
It’s crucial to remember that while cost is an important factor, it should not be the sole determinant when selecting a business coach. The value a coach can bring to your business in terms of strategy, profitability, and sustainability should greatly outweigh their fees.
